We’ve heard the saying “Your oral health is part of your overall health”! While bleeding or tender gums is sometimes ignored, we tend to seek medical attention right away for pain or irritation in another part of our bodies. Poor oral health including oral pain, missing teeth or oral infections can affect how a person speaks, eats and socializes in general, potentially affecting a person’s quality of life by affecting their physical, mental and social well being.
If unattended, poor oral health can potentially lead to something more serious such as oral cancer. Regular visits to the dentist will help you keep your oral health in check and your pearly whites shining.
The Canadian Dental Association identifies 5 steps to good oral health as part of a healthy lifestyle and to help reduce the risk of oral disease:
1. Brush your teeth & tongue twice a day using flouride, toothpaste and floss every day
2. Eat a well-balanced diet
3. Check your mouth regularly for signs of gum disease & cancer
4. Don’t smoke or chew tobacco
5. Visit your dentist regularly
