We turn the calendar year and many people set new goals – you may look at your daily nutrition choices, possibly how active you are and where you would like to be, or maybe this is the year you focus on your career goals. Whatever it may be, we have to remember that although we turn the calendar year and set ourselves up to take on 2015, each day is a new beginning. Each day is the opportunity for you to wake up and make one small positive step that will lead you to living a healthier life. So as you take on 2015 what are your goals? Have you written them down? Have you shared them with someone?
It’s fine and dandy to set goals out for yourself, but have you looked at how you may achieve them? A little bit of planning and prioritizing will ensure you achieve your goals. Healthy nutrition choices won’t just happen for you if they have not been in your daily rituals up until this point. Are there some new recipes you may need to take a look into? Do you want to take your slow cooker out of storage and begin to prepare dinner meals a few more nights a week? Your snack choices just won’t change if you don’t have a plan for how you may want to alter them. If you are not a breakfast eater and want to slowly introduce this into your day, you will need to figure out how you will make this happen.
What I’m trying to get at is that knowledge is power, but only when we act on it. You may “know” what you need to do to adapt a healthier habit into your daily rituals, but it will only happen when you act on it. So this year, as opposed to simply writing down your goals, do a little more planning on “how” you will make it happen, what “resources” you need to make it happen (is this support from your family, a stray in the grocery store from all of the packaged snacks, or packing your gym bag before going to bed), and “who” you will be accountable to. I also recommend to write your goals down and re-visit them every three weeks. Whether you have to log them into your phone’s calendar every 3 weeks or whatever your strategy may be, make sure they aren’t written down and forgotten about 3 weeks into the year!
